Lombardi by Eric Simonson Based on the book When Pride Still Mattered - A Life of Vince Lombardi written by David Maraniss "Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything." Few figures in American sports history loom as large as Vince Lombardi — and yet, few know the real story of Lombardi the man: his inspirations, his passions, and his ability to drive people to achieve what they never thought possible. Set during one week of the 1965 season, the play follows a Look Magazine reporter, Michael McCormick, who arrives in Green Bay wanting to find out what makes Lombardi win. But the players are wary of talking, so Michael turns to Lombardi's wife, Marie, for answers. What he uncovers is a portrait far more layered than any headline — a driven, complicated man shaped by faith, family, and an unrelenting hunger for excellence. Written by Academy Award winner and Steppenwolf Theatre Company member Eric Simonson and based on the bestselling biography When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss, Lombardi brought the Hall of Fame coach to Broadway in 2010, starring Dan Lauria and Tony nominee Judith Light, and directed by Tony nominee Thomas Kail. For Wisconsin audiences, this is more than a play about football — it's a story about home. Staged Reading, Drama Rating: PG-13 Runtime: 90 minutes. 15 minute intermission. Playwright Amy Hanson, from Racine, writes a gripping, emotionally charged family drama about the limits of forgiveness. In an ICU, two sisters and their mother confront dire news: the youngest, Piper, is on life support after an overdose. As the night unfolds, buried resentments, dark humor, and longheld secrets surface. Part family drama, part meditation on what addiction does to relationships, The Good One explores the messy, the funny, the poignant, and the unexpected. *If this were a movie, we think it would be rated “PG13.” Dates: July 24, 25, 26; July 31, August 1, 2 Times: Fridays at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Location: Over Our Head Players, Sixth Street Theatre Address: 318 Sixth Street, Racine, WI This production is part of World Premiere Wisconsin, a statewide festival celebrating new plays and musicals throughout 2026.
